In the age of the internet and networking, computers have become the most important tool in any office. Therefore, a company must find the right computers for their business. The only problem is that there are so many different types of computers, it is tough to figure out what computer is right for your business. A few factors to consider when buying a computer are the laptop/desktop, operating system and amount of memory.
The most important decision is whether to get a laptop or desktop. A laptop, sometimes called a notebook, is a highly portable and compact computer. It has a monitor built in so that would not be a separate purchase. A laptop computer is ideal for someone who is constantly using their computer in different locations. So if your business takes you on the road a lot, a laptop would be the computer for you. A desktop on the other hand is a stationary computer because of its size and multiple components. Desktops are tailored to someone who stays in the office with little chance of travel. From a security standpoint, laptops are more easily stolen allowing for someone outside of the company to access your company information and possible the network. Because of a desktop’s stationary nature, they are difficult to steal therefore more secure then a laptop.
There are two major operating systems used in the United States: Mac and Windows. Windows is the most popular operating system, but some people swear by the Mac operating system. The Windows system is preferred by most businesses because most employees have had previous exposure to the operating system therefore less on the job training is needed. The Mac system is preferred by businesses involved in graphic design and journalism. Those industries software seem to work better on the Mac operating system.
The business purpose of the computer should dictate the amount of the memory the computer needs. If the employee using the computer will be storing vast amounts of data then a 40 GB or larger hard drive may be needed. Employees doing menial tasks on their computers will be better suited with a smaller 20 GB hard drive.
There are many other smaller decisions like manufacturing warranty or monitor that need to be made when purchasing a computer. But we have covered the main issues one most consider when purchasing a computer. Best of luck shopping for your next work computer.
